13:10 Racing Post Arkle Trophy Trial Novices’ Chase (Registered As The November Novices’ Chase) (Grade 2)

Captain Conan put himself right into the Arkle picture with an impressive round of jumping.

After the race trainer Nicky Henderson commented:

It’s hard work in this ground, but I wouldn’t be too worried about him in it. I think he’s a two-miler – he’s got a lot of speed. It was a very pleasing start and I’m delighted. I don’t think he touched a twig but I would have been disappointed if he had. I looked after him last season and we didn’t take him to Cheltenham (in March) because this is what we had been waiting for. We’ve got Simonsig to come and those are the two (Arkle horses).

13:45 Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle

Double Ross relished a return to hurdles after two attempts over larger obstacles. Post race trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies  said: “He was always in control – amazing, really. He’ll go back novice chasing very soon but that was a hell of a consolation. We knew he’d love the ground.”

14:20 Shloer Chase

Wishful Thinking made the most of the absence of Sprinter Sacre justifying his odds on starting price. Afterwards trainer Philip Hobbs said: “I’m delighted. The main problem for a long time has been his breathing – he’s had three breathing operations. But this season he has been better with his breathing. We had a scare at the first fence, but he did it well. The Peterborough Chase (Huntingdon, December 13) is now the obvious race – that’s definitely an option.”

Jockey Richard Johnson said: “We had a big scare (at the first fence) but he jumped really well.”

15:25 Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle (Registered As The Hyde Novices’ Hurdle) (Grade 2)

Coneygree ( half brother to Carruthers ) put himself in line for a return visit in March landing the Grade 2 Neptune. Afterwards the trainer commented “It doesn’t look much fun out there on the ground. It was a brave performance to go out there and make the running. He’s a completely different stamp of a horse to Carruthers. Carruthers is only 16 hands and struggles to carry a big weight, whereas you’d hope this fellow could as he looks a proper chaser. You could look at either the two-and-a-half (Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle) or the three-miler (Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle) back here in March.”
