Ayr: Scottish Champion Hurdle Stats

The Scottish Champion Hurdle is the main supporting event on Scottish Grand National day. The event is traditionally run in late April. It is Grade 2 limited handicap run over 2 miles.

Overturn won this in 2011 and was runner up in the Cheltenham equivalent twelve months later but the event has declined somewhat since its heydey in the 1970s when the likes of Birds Nest, Sea Pigeon, Night Nurse and Comedy of Errors feature on the roll of honour. The last Scottish Champion Hurdle to have also also achieved victory in the Champion Hurdle was Alderbrook, the winner at Cheltenham in 1995.

Captain Christy won the race in 1973, the year before winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup as a novice.
