The legendary steeplechaser Moscow Flyer died last Friday. His regular big race jockey Barry Geraghty led the tributes in his At The Races blog:
 | Moscow Flyer was brilliantly trained by Jessie for his owner Brian Kearney, and Eamonn Leigh looked after him like he was his own. He ran in 40 races over hurdles and fences, and I rode him in 38 of them. I rode him to 25 of his 26 wins, including to 13 Grade 1 wins.He won the Arkle and he won two Tingle Creeks and two Champion Chases, the second one as an 11-year-old, when he beat Well Chief and Azertyuiop. We had some great battles with Well Chief and Azertyuiop.Moscow Flyer was the first 11-year-old to win the Champion Chase in 28 years, and no 11-year-old has won it since. He still had a champion’s pace, even at 11.I was only just getting going as a rider when Moscow came along, I needed a flagship horse to get my career going, and he was that flagship horse. I owe an awful lot to Moscow Flyer. I’m sure that he opened a lot of doors for me that would have been very difficult to open without him.And he was more than a flagship horse, he was a horse of a lifetime. He was my first Cheltenham Festival winner, my first Grade 1 winner. He was a very special horse for me. He was at the time, and he always will be. I was only down to see him at the Irish National Stud during the summer while I was out injured. I took the kids down to see him, and he looked a picture. He was a superstar, and it’s very sad to think that he won’t be around anymore. |
