Scottish Grand National Stats

The Scottish Grand National is run at Ayr racecourse in late April and has shown some strong trends over the last decade.

The Aintree Grand National winner Auroras Encore is a possible runner and could seek to emulate Red Rum who won both races in 1974. Auroras Encore finished second in the 2012 Scottish National.

Age: Hello Bud and Merigo have won as a 11 year old but 8 out of the last 10 have been aged 8-10 ( from roughly 2/3rds of the field)

Starting Price: No favourite has won since 2000. There have been three 15/2 winners in the past decade with remaining 8 winners priced in band from 12/1 to 66/1.

Weight: 8 of the last ten carried 10-06 or less ( from roughly 2/3rds of field). Bottom Weights/Horses out of the handicap have won 4 of the last 10. Only one horse ( Grey Abbey 2004) has carried over 11 stone to victory in the last decade.

Ratings: 8 of the last 10 winners were officially rated at 143 or less.

Form : The last ten winners have all had a run during the previous two months and finished in the first six. Four of the last ten winners were having their first run at the course. Of remaining six, four had previous winning course form.

Trainers: Local trainer Andrew Parker has laid out Merigo to finish 1st, 2nd and 1st in this in the last three years. Paul Nicholls has not won this race during the last decade ( from 19 attempts).

Stats Pick: Last year we tipped Quentin Collonges and the winner Merigo.
